Brecel first became interested in cue sports as a young kid while playing pool with his family while on vacation.

When his Father brought him to the local snooker club in Maasmechelen, a coach immediately recognized his natural talent. By age ten, he had already run a century sprint.

Two years later, he won a tournament in Belgium by defeating “some really good players,” It started to become clear that he might be able to make a living from the sport.

While Belgium offered some opportunities for competition, he soon started regularly crossing the English Channel to perform in the UK, thanks to the encouragement of a supportive Father who occasionally goes on tour with him.

Brecel made a strong entry into the sport when, at 14, he beat six-time World Championship runner-up Jimmy White in a contest in Portugal.

Still, he beat out Mark King, Ian McCulloch, Barry Pinches, and Michael Holt to earn a place in Sheffield.

In May 2011, Brecel received a wild card for the main tour of the professional 2011–12 season.

Brecel won his first game as a professional against Anthony Hamilton the following month after switching to that classification.

By the end of August, he was 87th in the world, while fellow Belgian Bjorn Haneveer was 65th.

Brecel won his first novice tournament in January 2012 with his first Maximum break. The next competition for Brecel was the first PTC event of the year.

The teenager had a good tournament, winning matches against former world champions Ken Doherty and Graeme Dott to advance to the round of 16, where he fell to Judd Trump 4-1.

Brecel won the tournament with a score of two hundred. In the first round of the second PTC tournament of the year, Brecel was defeated 4-2 by Matthew Selt.

In the first European Tour event of the year, he played a bit better and advanced to the round of 64, but Rory McLeod beat him 4-3.
