Horston had one last chance to tie the Virginia Tech game with less than two seconds remaining. She retrieved a long pass and made a crucial 3-pointer.

The scene was all too familiar for Tennessee, who lost senior Rae Burrell to a knee injury in the first game of the 2021-22 season.

Thirty seconds into the second quarter, UMass’ Sydney Taylor stepped before Horston as she drove on the baseline.

Horston collapsed after the impact and gripped her left knee as she passed out.

Horston has not played for Tennessee since February 17, when she suffered a fractured dislocated left elbow.

Due to the accident, her junior year was cut short by more than a month. Horston finished the Lady Vols’ season opener against Ohio State with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.

Horston committed to Tennessee to play coach Holly Warlick but learned of her dismissal while attending the McDonald’s All-American Game.

She was selected to the SEC All-Academic team and the SEC All-Freshman Team while playing under Kellie Harper after leading the Lady Volunteers in assists and steals, averaging 10.1 points and 4.6 assists per game.

She scored the game-winning goal against Auburn on March 1 by running with 0.6 seconds remaining.

While representing the United States, Horston was named the most valuable player at the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup and the FIBA Americas U16 Women’s Championship.

She helped her team win their second consecutive state championship as a senior in high school despite having a temperature of 102 °F (39 °C) the night before.

Despite having a poor shooting night, she recorded 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and a surgical mask while sitting on the bench to control her cough.

Horston, the nation’s top guard and the second-best prospect, committed to play college basketball at Tennessee.

She also participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game, scoring 14 points there to earn MVP honors.
